Kudou Kazahaya:
Gullible, energetic, and a little bit spastic, Kazahaya isn't stupid.... He's just a little too trusting and a lot naive. He's very intuitive, athletic, and caring, and he's very defensive about his shortcomings and is easily riled. He is a very friendly person and tries to get along well with everyone. He is not very inclined to physical shows of affection or even of touching people that often.
Kazahaya's powers:
Kazahaya is able to pull memories from objects. He has never demonstrated any ability to actually read minds or use objects to devine where people are located/what they're doing. His gift works almost exclusively on past events.
Pwned by power:
Depending on how powerful the memory or object is, Kaza can be completely rolled by it. He would see things that are part of the memory.
Other abilities:
There are two notable abilites that are portrayed in Lawful Drug besides Kazahaya's ability to see memories:
Other things to note:
The other players:
Himura Rikuou (the arrogant jerk) has the ablity to break things. Locks, rope, structural supports of a school gymnasium--the basics. He pretty much acts as a bodyguard for Kazahaya and saves his life on more than one occasion. He arrived at the Green Drug before Kazahaya. He's looking for Tsukiko, who went missing leaving behind a blood drenched room and a hair comb. Rikuo refuses to believe that she is dead even though neither Kakei nor Saiga have turned up any information on her what so ever.
Kakei (the sadistic pimp) is the owner of the Green Drug pharmacy. He is a very powerful precognitive psychic, but he cannot use his powers to learn anything about Tsukiko's where abouts because apparently her powers are equal to or greater than his. He is the one that takes and provides the special jobs and assignments for Rikuo and Kazahaya. He counts on Kazahaya's naive willingness to take the jobs without asking too many questions, and he seems to gain an amount of sadistic enjoyment out of letting them walk into situations without all the information about what's going on.
Saiga is almost a complete mystery. He and Kakei are arguably lovers (though mostly it's a losing argument if you try to deny it). He is a jovial fellow who tends to lay sleeping around the store. He delights in harassing/molesting Kazahaya. He never takes off his sunglasses, and has a multitude of domestic skills that scar Kazahaya badly including cooking and sewing (think: mofia thug does Martha Stewart). He apparently also gathers information for Kakei and is currently looking for information on Tsukiko.
The past:
Very little is known about Kazahaya's past. The little we do know comes from his dreams, memories, and what he lets slip around the others. Kazahaya has a twin sister named Kei. They grew up together "trapped in that house" and he apparently never attended school. He promises her as children that they will always be together. We don't know exactly why Kazahaya ran away from home, but most likely, it had to do with Kei. Whatever the reason he left home, Kakei was expecting him when Rikuou carried him home to the Green Drug pharmacy. Quoteth Kakei: "We've been waiting a long time for that boy and Rikuou to meet. For that boy to arrive... It's the whole reason I opened this store. To protect that boy... and those whom that boy holds dear."
The work:
Currently Kazahaya is employed at the Green Drug pharmacy. (No, he is not a pharmacist; he stocks shelves.) Kakei allows Rikuou and Kazahaya to stay in the small apartment above the store in exchange for their rent. In addition, Kazahaya works side jobs for Kakei using his powers. These jobs vary greatly from assignment to assignment and complexity. Because Kazahaya is verygullible agreeable, he often accepts jobs without learning the full discriptions of the jobs. He understands that Kakei is playing him but will go back and repeat the show over and over again. Kakei for his part seems to enjoy watching the boys struggle with their assignments and does not give them complete details of their jobs... ever.

Kazahaya's powers:
Kazahaya is able to pull memories from objects. He has never demonstrated any ability to actually read minds or use objects to devine where people are located/what they're doing. His gift works almost exclusively on past events.
- Photographs: Kazahaya can pick up very, very vague and unguided memories from photographs. He cannot pull solid evidence from them.
- Objects: He can straight up pull memories out of objects, if he choses to and sometimes even if he doesn't. He can pull memories out of many different kinds of objects including trees, clothing, water, beds, etc.
- People: ... Kaza's ability to see into people is best summed up with a scene from Volume 2:
Kaza and Rikuou are looking for something in the dark, holding hands:
Kaza: If I can at least touch something, I can use my powers.
Rikuou: Is that true? Do your powers automatically work when you touch anything?
Kaza: Not anything. Unless your defenses are completely down, or I am really able to concentrate, I can't see into you. Not that I would poke around in your memories.
To sum it up a little better: if Kaza is looking for something, chances are he can find it in someone's memories by touching them. If they've got psychic guards up, he can't.
Pwned by power:
Depending on how powerful the memory or object is, Kaza can be completely rolled by it. He would see things that are part of the memory.
- Mystical objects or objects that already possess a good deal of magic or power: He's never actually attempted to pull memories from an object of power; however, they do possess the ability to roll his mind under. He was almost literally sucked into a book in the first volume, and where he had been having a discussion with a woman under a tree; Rikuou merely saw him disappearing into a book. Another time, both Rikuou and Kazahaya were sucked into a vase's game (vase showed up again in XXXHolic).
- Memories: Kaza. Gets. Played. It's like the running theme of the manga and the short stories afterwards. So far, we have seen Kazahaya pulled completely into two memories. The first time we see this, Kazahaya is told to dress a certain way and go to a certain place at a certain time. This place contained a time pocket, and when Kazahaya touched a tree there, he was possessed by the memories of the tree and acted them out as though in a trance. Example 2: From one of drug extras (*curls into small ball snickering*), we get to see a very different side of Rikuou thanks to Kazahaya's powers and a shoe thrown on him. Kazahaya becomes impulsively possessed by Rikuou's desire for chocolate which lead to some very tasty scenes of Kaza eating out of Rikuou's hands, and much embarrassment on Kaza's part when he snapped out of it.
Other abilities:
There are two notable abilites that are portrayed in Lawful Drug besides Kazahaya's ability to see memories:
- Seeing through another person's eyes: At one point in the story, Kazahaya has become so ill he's having trouble seeing straight, and as such, cannot take on an assignment. However, using his powers to see though Rikuou's eyes, he is able to see perfectly clear.
- Kazahaya cannot see ghosts! It is one of the most important things to come up in the third book. He does however see a spiritual projection of a living person--their mind/soul acting out on its own. ((Example given from play: Kaza could see Pellaz's spirit in Cal's body, but could not see Cal when he was a poltergeist.))
Other things to note:
- When Kazahaya is sleeping or sick, his ability to pick up memories increases.
- He has excellent instincts. He's gullible, but he is able to read a lot in situations with other people. (Definition number 2 of clairvoyance: acute intuitive insight or perceptiveness.)
- Kazahaya really can't fight. He has never been shown as a fighter in the manga and most often, Rikuou accompanies him as a bodyguard. However, he has almost cat-like reflexes, agility, and is an incredibly fast runner.
- On that note, Kaza gets along very well with cats. As he puts it: "I used to live with a person with catlike qualities."
- ... He also has a very acute sense of smell; quoteth the Rikuou: "It means you have a very acute sense of smell--that you're able to zero in on your prey. Cats do that, too."
- Kazahaya does not actually see the person who's memories he's viewing. It is though he is in their body looking through their eyes like a window. As such, he very seldom, if ever, gets the emotional impressions that go along with the memories.
- 9 times out of 10, Kazahaya loses consciousness after having a vision, and often times when he's played by a memory, he won't remember most, if any, of it.
- ... Kudou sucks at Mahjong like whoa. (and Kakei's and evil pimp)
- Kazahaya is not a very good cook... at all.
- Kazahaya cannot swim.
